They are joined by the demigods Annabeth and Silena. Together, they resurrect a huge bronze dragon automaton to fight off the vicious ants that capture and nearly kill Beckendorf.

In his final big adventure, Percy and demigods Thalia and Nico are summoned to Hades by the goddess Persephone to retrieve a stolen sword that gives its owner the ability to summon the dead. Percy and his demigod friends set off on a mission in the Underworld to find the sword. They face many perils and dangers in their trek. They deal with a troll and the goddess of ghosts as well as a raging giant Titan.

But, in the end, they find the sword and return it to Hades with the caveat that he not raise it against the gods of the upper world. They run away from the dragon, who now pursues them after an order of Beckendorf, and manage to paralyze it, so it becomes a giant statue.

Suddenly, some Athena children find the group and take Percy and Beckendorf as their prisoners and congratulate Annabeth and Silena for trapping them. Percy is outraged and accuses Annabeth of having plotted everything, Annabeth defends herself by saying the whole dragon and Ant Hill thing was a coincidence.

Before going off to finish the game, she tells Percy to come see her during the fireworks. The boys are forced to stay in prison while the girls go win the game. Rick Riordan wrote this short story for World Book Day Persephone calls Percy , Thalia and Nico , the children of the Big Three, into the Underworld to retrieve Hades ' new sword from a demigod spy who stole it.

The problem is that Hades' keys, which let anyone out or into the Underworld, are in it. Persephone gives them a flower to track the thief.

When all of the petals fall off, the sword thief has made it out of the Underworld. Percy, Nico and Thalia must retrieve the sword before time runs out. They catch up with the thief, Ethan Nakamura, just as the last petal falls off the flower because Ethan has revived the Titan Iapetus. At the culmination of their fight, Percy flings Iapetus into the river Lethe, a river that erases memories.

Only Percy's powers as the son of Poseidon can keep him dry. Percy tells the now mind-wiped Iapetus that his name is Bob and that they are friends. When the three heroes and "Bob" return to Hades and Persephone with the sword, Hades is very unhappy about the sword and leaves in anger, threatening Persephone never to disobey him again.

By this, they know that Persephone commissioned the sword against Hades' orders. However, Percy saw a look of "hunger" in Hades' eyes while he stared at the sword. The book contains fictional interviews with multiple characters at Camp Half-Blood. The book received mixed reviews. Publishers Weekly criticized it saying, "Bland illustrations depicting the contents of Annabeth's trunk, a map of Camp Half-Blood and a short 'sneak peek' at the book The Last Olympian pad the contents barely to book length; the inclusion of a crossword puzzle and a word search makes the book difficult to share.

It was nice to dive back in to the world of Camp Half-Blood but I just couldn't get too involved with the new characters like I did with Percy and his crew. I also downloadd the second book to try and get more into it, that book will determine whether I continue the series or not.

As for if I would recommend this book, I'd say it's worth a try. I love a good book. My favorites are usually modern day stories about normal people with a little bit of magic thrown in to make it interesting.

I originally started reading the Percy Jackson series because my granddaughter liked the movie.

Series: Percy Jackson and the Olympians

So I bought her the series and we read at least a chapter or two every time we spend a few hours together. My girl does most of the reading and I sort of explain the parts or words she doesn't understand.

We've almost finished all of the Percy Jackson series. It started a bit slower than the other books. But as I read the story I found myself wondering how it was going to play out.

Greek mythology is just as fascinating as Roman mythology. I like that they're being mixed together and how these series are overlapping.

The message I see in both series is one of honesty, and friendship and trust. The concept of right and wrong should be installed into young people at an early age.

Age appropriate explanations of actions and consequences. These books have helped my granddaughter, who is just about 8 years old, to learn to think about what will happen once she has said or done something.

Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Demigod Files Summary & Study Guide

I'm thankful there are stories that have captured her interest and attention. She is also beginning to understand that the lessons these books are helping her to learn will help her throughout her life!! Steven M. Brown Top Contributor: Fantasy Books.

The three short storieswe're interesting but less than a chapters worth of material. There were a few notes also less than chapter worth of material that was interviews with a couple characters. In all honesty if it wasn't for the fact that years ago when I read the series a couple times it always annoyed me that I didn't know the short stories that was referenced in a few places in the series and sequence series I wouldn't have bought this.

This is something strictly for those who are collecting all of Rick Riordan's works.

I also think that the stories do feel sort of out of place because they do not really refer to the rest of the series the flow is not quite as smooth as the Main works from the author. Each of the stories does have the feeling of a Percy Jackson book where he is thrown into an adventure and has to overcome a situation.

It really was I think just a way to hold off readers back in the day while they waited for the fifth book to come out. There is a crossword puzzle and a work van in the back of the book that can be printed out perhaps. I do enjoy the series as a whole and finally was able to scratch the itch to read the stories hear that was referenced in the next book and a few times in the later series.
